MANIFESTO - Transgressions: |
The Angelos Transgressions - A historical perspective of the
ownership of Peter G. Angelos
In no particular order, an extended list of examples of what bad
owners do to their team and their fans to chase them away…we
hope Steve Bisciotti is listening!
Firing Jon Miller and subsequently blaming Miller’s desires for
the departure
The endless, droning, 20-minute speech on the evening of Cal
Ripken’s 2,131 in 1995
The nine years of animosity toward the Baltimore Ravens,
highlighted by the absence of any members being recognized by
the organization after Super Bowl XXXV victory (rumors insist
that employees weren’t allowed to look out the window and
acknowledge the victory parade)
Botching the Mike Mussina negotiations
The word “BALTIMORE” doesn’t exist on any logo or the road
jerseys
Overpaying Rafael Palmeiro in 1993 and then lowballing him after
the five most productive season in Orioles history
Constant ticket price increases and adding seats to the front
row
Ottawa???? After 50 years, he and the organization got the boot
by the entire city of Rochester
Playing The Sun vs. The Washington Post every time something
negative is written
Meddling in the signing (and overpaying) of Brady Anderson at
Boccacio’s
Firing John Lowenstein and Mel Proctor
Firing Michael Reghi…a month before the season began
Inviting the two-time champion Baltimore Blast to the game…then
canceling because of a tiff involving Baltimore Arena signage
with Ed Hale
Incredible disregard for the fans when scheduling/rescheduling
games
Rude ushers
Using the scoreboard to lead cheers…what an insult!
The disgrace that is Fort Lauderdale Stadium and spring training
Nearly a decade of having the major league camp and minor league
camp four hours apart…how can this promote a healthy
organization?
Playing baseball games in Cuba in 1999, hanging out with Fidel
Castro (a murderer) and then allowing his own team to tank a
game at Camden Yards in a protest
Firing Frank Wren and issuing a press release to the media
implicating Cal Ripken’s involvement
Bringing Albert Belle into the organization and selling it to
the fans as a positive thing (one of many jerks we’ve been asked
to support)
Hiring of Phil Regan over Davey Johnson in 1994
The handling of the Davey Johnson situation in 1997, and the
excuses that he made about Davey and the Roberto Alomar fine
going to his wife's charity as a reason to fire him
Moving Ray Miller from pitching coach to manager.
Allowing Syd Thrift to whisper in his ear for two seasons about
his organization, and allowing that to poison his mind against
his people, propping up Thrift into the Director of Baseball
operations as a result.
Allowing his sons, John and Louis, to have way too much
influence over the organization
Blurring the lines between his baseball people and himself.
Every time he would get involved with a contract negotiation or
simply nixing his GM's decisions.
The consistent complaint from his baseball people that they
couldn't make moves without his approval, but that it was always
difficult to get an answer from him in a timely fashion.
Telling Johnny Oates to play Leo Gomez over Chris Sabo
Getting involved in Pat Gillick’s dealings to trade David Wells
and Bobby Bonilla in 1996
Not responding to complaints and issues from fans in an upfront
and honest fashion.
Calling bleacher seats Eutaw Street Reserved…as though we’re
idiots
Allowing players to treat fans poorly
Allowing players to treat the media with disdain
Allowing and encouraging every manager during his tenure to live
in another community…what kind of commitment and message is
that???
Treating Washington D.C. fans with disdain after their many
years of support
Not being accessible in the community to be accountable for the
decisions made by the club
Signing Sidney Ponson…again!
Signing Rafael Palmeiro…again!
This is just a partial list...we can't think of everything! If
you have any more reasons why you're angry, feel free to email
them to nasty@wnst.net and
we'll be glad to post them here! |
